Draw by Computer

Herbert W. Franke, a pioneer of computer art who anticipated the metaverse, passed away on July 16 at the age of 95. About 80 of the most renowned generative artists, photographers, poets, and virtual world builders working today were invited by art meets science – Foundation Herbert W. Franke to honor his life and work.

Draw by Computer is a series of ten works created for the Herbert W. Franke tribute, each animating between multiple attempts of drawing a geometric primitive by hand.

The first attempt is centered using an on-screen guide. Saving the points clears the screen, and the subsequent four rounds of drawing attempt to maintain this form.

Each piece animates through the five attempts over 60 seconds, returning to the traced attempt before degrading through the hand-drawn attempts.
